Kaua’i Day 3

On Thursday, we checked out Kauai Backcountry Mountain Tubing!
First, we rode an open air bus into the mountains.
On the way, our guide, Tane,
told us a lot about the island.

We stopped to see Mount Waialeale on the way.  It’s the highest point on the island and one of the rainiest places on Earth.

The scenery along the way was beautiful

and we even saw a waterfall in the distance.

We got to the drop off point and started our adventure in a bamboo grove.

Our group had 22 people in it.

We got in our tubes and floated through an old sugar cane irrigation system that was hand dug around 1870.

There were lots of tunnels

and one of them was three-fourths of a mile long.

We were glad we had headlamps!

The tubes went faster than I’d expected

and Harper was pretty nervous!

but we all had a great time!

There were several places
where the water moved slower

and we could chat and enjoy the scenery.

It was my favorite part of Kaua’i!

Mountain tubing will be one of our
favorite memories for sure!

We stopped for a picnic lunch on
our way back down the mountain.

Our guide told us about some nearby waterfalls, so we stopped to check them out.

He also told us to buy some banana bread from the lady selling it at the waterfalls.
It was the best banana bread we’ve ever had.
I only got a picture of Harper eating the last bite!

We spent the afternoon relaxing in the pools

and checked out Spouting Horn later that night. It is a blowhole that shoots water up to 50 feet in the air when the waves crash into the lava tube.  We loved seeing the rainbows it created.

The area around Spouting Horn was beautiful too!

When we were leaving, Harper somehow got herself wedged in the floor of our rental car.

Later, we stopped at a little shopping mall and watched hula dancers perform.

It was another day filled with fun!
